Content Marketing Movie Website Design WordPress

LinkWithin, Related Posts Plugin Combination. Choose One, not Both.

Recently I have seen on an increasing number of movie websites the LinkWithin related post widget at the bottom of their posts. This is fine and dandy except they are still using the Related Posts WordPress plugin, or something analogous, as well. These movie websites now have two Related Posts plugins at the bottom of their posts, one that displays with text links and a picture (LinkWithin) and one that displays only text links (Related Posts).

Typically, these plugins will look at how a story was tagged and then display a short list of similar stories that use the same keywords. LinkWithin is the newest contender in this market. The plugin looks at tags, but it also analyzes other factors like relevancy, popularity, and recency. Unlike similar plugins, however, LinkWithin doesn’t just display a list of headlines underneath each post, but also a thumbnail with a picture from each post, which makes it far more attractive than most of its competitors.

Anyone can see the attractive nature of LinkWithin. We’ll discuss at a later date which is better for a movie website: LinkWithin or the Related Posts WordPress plugin. For this post, your question should be: Why are these movie websites using two Related Posts widgets coterminous? Its a waste of resources and it makes the loading of the post page slower. First one well-established movie website, SlashFilm, was doing this and now other movie website are following suite. It looks so foolish whenever I see it.

I do not understand why they simply do not choose one or the other. Why are they using both? What does that accomplish? More cluster at the bottom of the post? I can understand it if the webmasters’ website or theme utilizes the Related Posts WordPress Plugin by default (its integrated), they have no way of stopping this function from occurring but they would rather use LinkWithin and decide to use both. Maybe they do no have the HTML knowledge to eliminate the necessary lines of code, who knows.

What I do know is that using both coterminous is a waste of valuable post space. Post space is the most valuable space on your movie website, even more so than your movie website sidebar. Why not use the space that one of those Related Posts widgets is taking up to display something else, a sponsored movie product, a service, another aspect of your website? Showing two sets of Related Posts at the bottom of posts is completely unnecessary.

If you are a movie webmaster new to the game, do not do this. Also, do not play follow the leader. That is why many movie websites are currently doing the double dip, related posts widget tango right now and why the use of LinkWithin has increased across movie websites. Pay attention to the trends but do not become a servant of them.

The root of problem is easy to ascertain. Movie Webmasters liked the amount of information presented by the Related Posts WordPress plugin and they liked the picture/text combo platter served up by the LinkWithin widget. Since neither came with both attributes they desired they decided to use both. Bad decision on their part. Why display similar information at the bottom of your posts TWICE? They should have just chosen one or the other. Now their posts are over-loaded at the bottom. This problem can easily be remedied with the elimination of one of the related post widgets.
