Apple‘s iTunes Movie Trailers website has decided to limit some of its functionality and product offerings. Apple’s iTunes Movie Trailers website will no longer allow patrons the ability to download movie trailers from the website to their harddrive. “The popular Apple Trailer site has received a recent downgrade as downloads are no longer permitted for trailers uploaded on May 22nd or after.” iTunes Movie Trailers’ will no longer be offering trailers in 1080p either, which some find strange since “YouTube streams trailers in 1080p.”

These two strategic moves seem as though they were aimed to stem the tide of piracy of copyrighted material e.g. hi-resolution screen pictures, movie clips, and YouTube uploads from the downloaded trailers.
Secondly, the change could have something to do with a rumored Apple television set that’s supposedly in the works. Perhaps Apple wants people to enjoy full-resolution movie trailers exclusively on the upcoming TV set, or on their existing telly through the $99 Apple TV set-top box.
This is recently a blow to movie trailer lovers and webmasters that used Apple’s iTunes Movie Trailers website as a source for trailers to upload and embed in their website.

I will certainly miss the ability to download trailers from Apple. I suspect many will. Countless times I have seen trailers on YouTube with the Apple logo in one of the lower corners of trailer.
